Do government job websites charge a fee to apply?

Only the official examination fee, paid on the official portal itself — typically ₹0 for women, SC/ST, PwBD and EWS candidates and around ₹100–₹700 for general/OBC. No agent or third-party site can charge you to 'arrange' a government job; that is always a scam.

Central exams run through UPSC, SSC, Railways (RRB) and IBPS for banking; state jobs run through each state's Public Service Commission; and the government's own all-in-one board is the National Career Service. Central government — the four you must know

UPSC — upsc.gov.in Visit → The Union Public Service Commission runs the Civil Services Examination (IAS, IPS, IFS), plus NDA, CDS, CAPF and central engineering and medical services. Applications are filed on upsconline.nic.in.

SSC — ssc.gov.in Visit → The Staff Selection Commission hires for most non-gazetted central posts: CGL (graduate level), CHSL (12th level), MTS, GD Constable for the central armed police forces, JE and stenographer.

Railways — rrbapply.gov.in Visit → Indian Railways is the country's largest single employer. One RRB notification can carry tens of thousands of vacancies — ALP, Technician, NTPC, JE and Group D. All applications go through the single RRB apply portal.

Banking — ibps.in Visit → IBPS conducts common recruitment for public sector banks — PO, Clerk and Specialist Officer. SBI recruits separately on its own careers page, and RBI on opportunities.rbi.org.in.

Defence, police & teaching

Armed forces & Agnipath Army → Agniveer entry for Army, Navy (joinindiannavy.gov.in) and Air Force (agnipathvayu.cdac.in); officer entry via UPSC's NDA and CDS. Central armed police forces — BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, SSB — are recruited through SSC GD and UPSC CAPF.

State police & teaching via state boards → Constable and sub-inspector drives are run by state police boards. Teaching ranges from TET-qualified school teachers to Assistant Professor posts needing UGC NET or a Ph.D. — announced on each state's PSC and education department sites.
